Opening Your Students' Eyes to Global Poverty
with Becky Schulte of Poverty Encounter
Teachers have described the Poverty Encounter virtual tour as a “mission trip for your classroom!” Learn how God is using the church and His people to serve the needs of families living in extreme poverty all around the world. Students leave with greater empathy and compassion for children in need, and a deeper understanding of global poverty. School Partnership information for private schools and accommodations for public schools will also be provided. Poverty Encounter is an initiative of Children’s Hunger Fund.
About Poverty Encounter
Poverty Encounter impacts the next generation by bringing real stories of children living in extreme poverty to life. Located in Los Angeles, CA, the 16,000 sq ft award-winning exhibit opened in 2018. The experience takes guests on guided tours through four countries in the developing world, then provides an opportunity to pack food for those in need. As a result of the closure during the 2020 pandemic, Poverty Encounter created a virtual tour and online School Partnership Program, allowing K-12 schools across the nation to participate in this eye-opening experience free of charge.
Poverty Encounter is an initiative of Children’s Hunger Fund, a faith-based non-profit organization serving the church and suffering children in 26 countries around the world since 1991.

I teach 6th grade Western Hemisphere Geography in a public school with a population of 84% minority races, 74% on free or reduced lunches, and 37 different languages spoken in the homes of our students. These virtual tour videos will be an asset as we discuss the variety of cultures within countries.
Definitely a great asset!!
I love how this tour seems to hit the nail on the head of both acknowledging the complexities and nuances of poverty in a dignifying way while also boiling it down in a way kids can understand and respond! Such a neat resource for students to broaden their worldview and get a glimpse into lives different from their own.
Good points!!!
